6 Best Everyday Makeup Tips for Over 30s
Looking for everyday makeup tips that actually work in your 30s? As our skin changes, so do the techniques and products that suit us best. Heavy foundations, thick concealers, and overly bold eye looks that worked in our 20s often feel less flattering now, especially on busy mornings when time is short. Gone are the days of copious glittery blue eyeliner; was anyone else obsessed with those Urban Decay Heavy Metal glitter liners?
These days, my approach to makeup is much simpler. I focus on hydration, forgiving textures, and small tweaks that make a noticeable difference without adding extra steps. The goal is not to look “done up”, but to look fresh, polished, and like myself, even when I’m rushing out the door.
This guide sits at the centre of my low-maintenance beauty approach. It’s designed to help you build an everyday makeup routine that works with your skin and lifestyle, not against it.

1. Prep Your Skin for a Smooth Base

One of the biggest makeup lessons I’ve learned in my 30s is that good makeup starts well before foundation. When skin is dry, dehydrated, or textured, piling on product only makes things more obvious.
Instead of trying to cover everything, I focus on getting my skin into the best possible condition first. That way, makeup sits better, and I can use much less of it.
My simple pre-makeup skincare routine looks like this:
- A hydrating cleanser that doesn’t strip the skin
- Gentle exfoliation two to three times a week to smooth texture
- A lightweight moisturiser to plump and soften
- Daily SPF to protect against further skin ageing
If you’re not sure where to start, my skincare guide for your 30s breaks down what actually matters as skin changes, with simple routines you can adapt to your mornings.
2. Choose Hydrating Bases Over Full-Coverage Foundations

Full-coverage foundations used to be my go-to, but now I find they can emphasise dryness and fine lines rather than disguise them. For everyday wear, hydrating, lightweight bases are far more forgiving and much quicker to apply.
Skin tints, sheer foundations, and glow-boosting products even out the complexion while still letting real skin show through.
Top Picks for Everyday Wear:
- Sculpted by Aimee Tint & Glow (£23) – A sheer, dewy base with SPF and skincare benefits.
- Oskia Nutri-Bronze (£64) – Adds a warm glow for no-makeup days.
- Armani Luminous Silk Foundation (£46) – Perfect for when I want a polished look without heaviness.
These formulas let your real skin shine through while evening out the complexion.

3. Apply Concealer Strategically

I actually use concealer more in my 30s than I did in my 20s, just not all over my face. Instead of layering it everywhere, I focus on targeted areas that need a little extra brightness.
How I apply concealer now:
- A small amount under the eyes to brighten
- Around the nose where I tend to have redness
- On the odd blemish if needed
Hydrating formulas are key, especially around the eyes, where dryness and creasing can be more noticeable.
Concealers I reach for regularly:
- Beauty Pie Superluminous Under-Eye Genius for subtle correction
- Sculpted by Aimee Brighten Up Concealer for a natural finish

Prepping the under-eye area helps too. I’ve rounded up my favourites here: The Best Brightening Eye Creams for Tired Eyes.
4. Switch to liquid or cream blush

Powder blush can sometimes sit on top of the skin and highlight dryness. Cream and liquid blushes blend more seamlessly and give a softer, more natural flush, which is especially flattering as skin matures.
They also work well with lighter base products, keeping everything looking fresh rather than layered.
My go-to options:
- Sculpted by Aimee Cream Luxe Blush – doubles as a lip tint
- e.l.f. Camo Liquid Blush – highly pigmented, so a tiny amount is enough
- Chantecaille Cheek Gelée – beautiful if you like a sheer glow. Read my full review here!
If you want extra longevity, a light dusting of powder blush over the top can help lock everything in without looking heavy.
5. Swap Lipstick for Hydrating Tinted Balms

As lips lose volume and moisture over time, matte or drying lipsticks can feel less comfortable and less flattering. Tinted lip balms give colour, hydration, and a softer finish that suits everyday wear.
They’re also much easier to reapply without a mirror, which makes them ideal for busy days.
One I always come back to:
- Dior Addict Lip Glow in 001 Pink or 012 Rosewood

6. Switch to Brown Mascara & Eyeliner for a Softer Look

Black mascara and eyeliner will always be classics, but as I get older, I find that brown tones are softer and more flattering.
Current Favourites:
- Beauty Pie The Perfect Waterproof Mascara (£12) in Superglossy Brown – I wore it to a spa a few days ago and it didn’t budge in saunas or pools but came off easily with micellar water!
- Maybelline Lash Sensational Sky High Mascara (£12.99) in Brown – Affordable and lengthening.
- Maybelline Tattoo Liner Smokey Gel Pencil (£6.99) in Brown – Ideal for an everyday soft smoky eye.
Brown eyeliner and mascara enhance the eyes subtly, making them look bigger and more awake without the harshness of black.
Makeup Works Best When Your Skin Does the Heavy Lifting
As we get older, skincare plays a bigger role in how makeup looks and wears. When skin is well hydrated and balanced, makeup becomes quicker, lighter, and more forgiving.
