14 Early Fall Outfits for That Awkward In-Between Weather
There’s always that awkward point at the end of summer when I’m completely ready to start wearing fall clothes, but the weather hasn’t quite caught up. It’s too warm for chunky knits and boots, but my summer dresses and sandals suddenly don’t feel quite right either.
That’s where early fall outfits come in.
For me, the easiest way to dress for late summer and early fall is to keep some of the lightweight basics I’ve been wearing all summer, like T-shirts, tanks, skirts and lightweight trousers, and start introducing richer colours, suede textures and light layers.
You don’t need to switch your whole wardrobe over at once. A suede bag, lightweight jacket or pair of loafers can be enough to make an otherwise summery outfit feel ready for the new season.
If you’re looking for late summer to early fall outfits that actually work when the weather is still fairly mild, these are 14 easy combinations to try.
If you’re starting to think beyond transitional dressing, my fall capsule wardrobe has all the key pieces you need to build easy outfits throughout the rest of the season.
1. Leopard Print Skirt + T-Shirt + Lightweight Jacket

Animal prints are still going strong in 2026, and leopard print can practically be considered a neutral at this point! It brings in all those warm brown and neutral tones without requiring any heavy layers.
Pair a leopard maxi or midi skirt with a simple blue T-shirt and brown suede loafers, then add a lightweight khaki jacket that you can easily take off if the day warms up. Funnel neck jackets are going to be huge for Autumn 2026, and this is an easy way to try out the trend.
The blue tee stops the outfit from becoming too predictably autumnal, while the tan bag ties back into the warmer colours in the skirt.
This outfit is perfect for everyday casual days when you don’t know what the weather is going to do.
2. Wide Leg Jeans + Burgundy Blazer

One of the simplest ways to make jeans and a T-shirt feel more appropriate for fall is to change the colour palette.
Burgundy is perfect for this. A burgundy tee and matching blazer instantly make light-wash wide leg jeans feel more seasonal without adding lots of heavy clothing.
I’d keep the rest casual with retro sneakers and a small suede shoulder bag. The sneakers make this much more wearable for everyday than adding boots or heels would.
And if it’s still warm? Just carry the blazer and the burgundy T-shirt will still give you that early fall look.
3. Burgundy Satin Skirt + White T-Shirt + Cardigan

A satin skirt doesn’t need to be saved for evenings or colder weather. It’s actually a really useful transitional piece because it’s lightweight enough for warm days but feels a little more polished than a summer skirt.
Here I’ve paired a deep burgundy satin skirt with a simple white T-shirt and neutral slingbacks.
The grey cardigan gives you an optional extra layer rather than making the outfit dependent on cooler weather. Wear it normally, drape it over your shoulders or leave it in your bag.
A tan tote softens the burgundy and grey and keeps the overall look wearable for daytime.
If you already have a satin skirt sitting in your wardrobe, this is an easy way to start wearing it before winter arrives.
Satin skirts are particularly good for transitional dressing, and I have plenty more satin skirt outfit ideas if you want different ways to style one throughout the year.
4. Jeans + T-Shirt + Brown Suede Jacket

This might be one of my favourite early fall outfit formulas because it couldn’t be easier. Start with the same jeans and T-shirt you could have worn in summer, then add a brown suede or faux-suede jacket.
That one layer completely changes the outfit.
Suede is particularly good at this time of year because it gives you the texture and rich colour associated with fall without needing a thick coat. A slouchy brown suede bag continues the theme without looking overly coordinated. Finish with retro sneakers for an easy casual outfit that would work for shopping, the school run or a weekend lunch.
5. Striped Top + Wide Leg Jeans + Loafers

A Breton striped top with wide leg jeans is one of those classic combinations that works almost year-round, but swapping summer sandals for tan loafers immediately moves it towards fall.
The slightly longer sleeves give you a little more coverage while still being light enough for mild days.
Add a structured tan tote and sunglasses, and you have an easy outfit for those sunny September days when it still feels far too warm for knitwear.
Wide leg denim is one of the pieces I reach for most for easy everyday outfits, and I’ve shared more wide leg jeans outfit ideas if you need some fresh ways to style yours.
6. Leopard Skirt + Sleeveless Knit + Blazer

If you want something slightly smarter, try swapping your summer tank for a sleeveless knit.
A chocolate brown knit works particularly well with a leopard print skirt, while an oatmeal or stone blazer keeps the overall palette light enough for early fall.
I love the unexpected blue suede bag here. Everything doesn’t have to be brown just because it’s autumn, and a contrasting accessory can stop a neutral outfit from feeling flat.
Olive suede flats finish the outfit without making it feel too dressy.
7. White Jeans + White Tee + Tan Jacket

Don’t pack your white jeans away at the end of August. White and ecru denim can look brilliant in fall when you pair it with warmer colours and textures.
A white T-shirt and wide leg white jeans create a simple tonal base, while a tan utility jacket, brown suede sneakers and matching bag bring in those autumnal shades.
It’s a particularly good option for late summer early fall outfits because you’re getting the lighter feel of a summer outfit with just enough fall colour layered over it.
Later in the season, the same white jeans could work with chunky knits and boots.
8. Jeans + T-Shirt + Bright Lightweight Jacket

Early fall doesn’t have to mean an immediate switch to beige, brown and burgundy.
A bright red lightweight jacket looks great against a muted blue T-shirt and pale denim, while tan accessories keep everything grounded.
The key here is the weight of the jacket. Look for something light enough to throw on over a tee rather than a padded or heavily lined style.
Neutral sneakers and a tan bag make this an easy everyday outfit while still giving it more personality than a basic jeans-and-jacket combination.
9. Black Jeans + White Tank + Red Barn Jacket

A white tank is one of the easiest summer pieces to carry into September. Instead of styling it with shorts or a skirt, pair it with black wide leg jeans and add a light jacket.
This red jacket with its contrasting brown collar gives the outfit a strong fall feel, especially when combined with a chocolate suede tote and brown leather loafers.
The tank underneath keeps everything from becoming too heavy.
It’s also a useful layering formula to remember throughout early fall:
summer top + jeans + fall jacket + loafers.
Simple, but it works.
10. Black Satin Skirt + White T-Shirt + Suede Mary Janes

This is another way to bring a satin skirt into your everyday wardrobe.
The black satin maxi feels sophisticated, but the plain white T-shirt keeps it relaxed enough for daytime. The accessories help turn it into an autumn outfit.
Tan suede Mary Janes introduce texture, while the rust suede shoulder bag adds a proper fall colour without overwhelming the otherwise neutral outfit.
I wouldn’t add another layer unless you actually need one. Part of what makes this work is its simplicity.
It’s a great example of how you can create an early fall outfit for warm weather without wearing a jacket at all.
11. Checked Trousers + Lightweight Top + Red Jacket

Tailored trousers are another easy way to move away from summer dressing without immediately reaching for jeans.
A subtle check feels particularly appropriate for fall, while a fitted grey long-sleeve top keeps the outfit streamlined. The red lightweight jacket adds colour and gives you a practical extra layer for cooler mornings.
I’d keep the accessories neutral with tan loafers and a structured tote so that the red remains the focus.
This would also make a good early fall work outfit if your workplace has a fairly relaxed dress code.
12. Olive Trousers + Cream Tee + Barn Jacket

Olive green is one of my favourite colours for transitional dressing because it works just as well with summer neutrals as it does with deeper autumn shades.
Here, relaxed olive trousers are paired with a loose cream T-shirt and a tan barn-style jacket.
The outfit is mostly earthy and neutral, so the blue suede shoulder bag adds a really nice contrast. Olive suede flats keep everything comfortable and continue the soft-texture theme.
On warmer days, lose the jacket, and you still have an outfit that feels seasonally appropriate.
13. Jeans + Striped Knit + Lightweight Rain Jacket

Some early fall days aren’t warm and sunny (especially here in the UK!), they’re often wet, breezy and impossible to dress for.
For those days, jeans, sneakers and a lightweight waterproof jacket are hard to beat.
A navy striped knit adds a classic fall layer without being as heavy as a chunky sweater, while a brown suede bag brings some warmth into the navy and denim palette.
I’d choose a lightweight jacket rather than your full winter waterproof at this stage of the year. You want something that can handle a shower without leaving you overheating five minutes later.
This is probably the most practical outfit of the whole collection.
14. Brown Wide Leg Trousers + Striped Top + Lightweight Jacket

Brown trousers are an easy alternative to jeans once you start craving more autumnal colours.
Pair them with a chocolate-and-cream striped long-sleeve top and burgundy flats for a rich fall colour palette that still feels light enough for September.
The checked lightweight jacket adds another subtle pattern, but because everything sits within similar warm neutral tones, the combination doesn’t feel too busy.
Finish with a simple tan tote.
This is the kind of outfit I’d wear when I want to feel properly dressed for fall even though it’s still nowhere near coat-and-boots weather.
How to Dress for Early Fall When It’s Still Warm
It’s easy to get carried away when the new season collections arrive in store, but you don’t need chunky sweaters, thick coats and knee-high boots just because September has arrived.
Instead, start with your summer basics and change one or two elements. Lightweight jackets are probably the most useful addition. Barn jackets, suede jackets, blazers and utility jackets all give an outfit a fall feel while being easy to remove.
Shoes make a surprisingly big difference too. Swap sandals for loafers, Mary Janes, ballet flats or retro sneakers, and even a T-shirt and skirt can suddenly look much more autumnal.
Then introduce richer colours and textures gradually. Burgundy, chocolate brown, tan, olive, suede and satin all work beautifully alongside white tees and pale denim.
It’s less about having a completely separate early fall wardrobe and more about finding new ways to style pieces you already own.
Once the weather starts to cool down, a lightweight trench is another easy layer to add; I’ve put together plenty more trench coat outfit ideas for later in the season.
Easy Early Fall Outfit Formulae to Remember
If you’re staring at your wardrobe and don’t know what to wear, these are the combinations I’d come back to:
- Jeans + T-shirt + lightweight suede or barn jacket
- Satin skirt + simple tee + suede flats
- Wide leg trousers + lightweight long-sleeve top + loafers
- White jeans + neutral tee + tan jacket
- Maxi skirt + sleeveless knit + blazer
- Jeans + striped top + loafers
- Tank top + dark jeans + lightweight jacket
The easiest approach is to combine one or two summer pieces with one distinctly autumnal piece rather than changing everything at once.
That’s what makes these outfits useful for the strange few weeks between summer and proper sweater weather, and means you’ll get much more wear out of the clothes already in your wardrobe.
A denim maxi is another great alternative to jeans at this time of year, and these denim maxi skirt outfits have plenty of ideas for styling one across different seasons.
