15 Chic Fall Outfits With Boots to Copy This Season

·

Taking my boots out of hibernation is one of my favourite parts of autumn. Once temperatures start to drop, you can take fairly simple combinations, like jeans and a sweater, a midi skirt and knit, or even a basic dress, and make them feel instantly more seasonal with the right pair of boots.

This year, I’m especially drawn to knee-high boots and rich brown suede styles, although classic black boots and ankle boots are still some of the most useful shoes you can have in a fall wardrobe. Brown, burgundy, olive, soft blue and warm neutrals also make an appearance throughout these outfits, which gives the usual fall colour palette a slightly fresher feel.

If you’re looking for fall outfits with boots that feel current but are still genuinely wearable, these 15 looks cover everything from casual jeans outfits to skirts, dresses and more polished combinations.

1. Leopard Print Skirt + Brown Knee-High Boots

Leopard print works almost like a neutral for fall, especially when you keep everything around it simple. Here, a soft gray sweater tones down the print, while dark brown knee-high boots and a suede bag pick up the warmer shades in the skirt.

This is an easy way to wear a statement skirt without the finished outfit feeling too busy. You could also add a long chocolate or camel coat once the weather gets colder.

2. Skorts + Black Knee-High Boots

For a more polished take on a mini skirt and boots, try a matching chocolate pinstripe blazer and skorts with a soft blue knit underneath.

I love the contrast between the brown tailoring and pale blue sweater; it stops the outfit from feeling too predictable. Sleek black knee-high boots and a structured black bag pull everything together.

This would work well for dinner, drinks, or anywhere you want to look a little more dressed up without wearing a dress.

3. Wide-Leg Jeans + Brown Ankle Boots

One of the easiest outfits with ankle boots is also one of the simplest: jeans, a striped top and a jacket.

The chocolate suede jacket makes this version feel current, while the brown pointed-toe ankle boots give the wide-leg jeans a slightly dressier finish. A tan bag adds another warm shade without making everything too perfectly matched.

The key with wide-leg jeans and ankle boots is getting the hem right. Ideally, the jeans should skim over the top of the boots rather than leaving an awkward gap between the two. If this is your go-to denim shape, you’ll find plenty more ideas in my wide leg jeans outfits guide.

4. Brown Trousers + Ankle Boots

Chocolate brown trousers are a great alternative to jeans in fall, especially when you want something comfortable but a little more put together.

I’ve paired them here with a bright green sweater, oatmeal herringbone coat and warm tan accessories. The green gives an otherwise neutral outfit a much-needed shot of colour.

This is also a good example of why your fall wardrobe doesn’t need to consist entirely of beige, brown and black. One saturated colour can completely change a fairly classic outfit.

5. Jeans + Brown Knee-High Boots

If you’re wondering how to make knee-high or cowboy boots work with jeans without tucking skinny jeans into them, wear them underneath a wider-leg pair instead.

The boots are less obvious, but you still get the elongated shape and extra warmth of a tall boot. Here I’ve kept the rest of the outfit casual with blue jeans, a rust sweater and a slouchy chocolate suede bag.

The warm rust and dark brown combination is great for early-to-mid fall.

6. Mini Skirt + Long Brown Boots

This is one of my favourite long brown boots outfits because it’s so simple.

A cream sweater and chocolate mini skirt create a clean neutral base, while the tall suede boots give the outfit much more impact. The dark shoulder bag and simple gold earrings are really all it needs.

There’s also a useful styling formula here that you can recreate with pieces you already own:

simple knit + mini skirt + knee-high boots + small shoulder bag

Change the colours and textures, and it can look completely different each time.

7. Burgundy Satin Skirt + Brown Boots

Satin skirts aren’t just for dressier outfits. Pairing one with a relaxed knit and suede boots makes it much easier to wear during the day.

Burgundy looks so good with chocolate brown, and the taupe sweater softens both deeper colours. A structured brown suede bag keeps everything within the same warm palette.

If you’ve been looking for fall skirt outfits with boots, this combination is an easy one to recreate with almost any midi skirt. You don’t necessarily need satin; a knitted, denim, or softly draped midi would work too.

8. Sweater Dress + Tall Brown Boots

A sweater dress and knee-high boots is one of those fall combinations that requires almost no styling.

This charcoal wrap dress has enough shape at the waist to stop the longer silhouette feeling heavy. Dark brown suede boots and a matching slouchy bag add warmth, while a classic trench coat makes it practical for transitional weather. If a trench is one of your most-worn fall layers, I’ve also shared more trench coat outfits that work with everything from jeans to dresses.

If you’re wearing a longer midi dress like this, I prefer a streamlined boot underneath rather than anything too chunky.

9. Barn Jacket + Jeans + Brown Boots

A barn jacket is an easy way to update a basic jeans-and-sweater outfit this fall.

The olive jacket, gray knit and light-wash jeans are all fairly understated, so the dark brown knee-high boots add some contrast. A tan leather bag keeps the outfit from becoming too dark.

You don’t have to see the whole boot for knee-high boots to work with jeans either. Wearing them underneath straight or wider-leg denim gives you a completely different look from styling them with skirts.

10. Blue Knit + Mini Skirt + Black Knee-High Boots

Chocolate brown and soft blue is one of my favourite colour combinations in this group of outfits.

A simple blue knit makes the brown mini feel much less traditional, while black knee-high boots give the outfit some definition. The tan bag brings another warm tone into the mix without competing with the sweater.

This is exactly the kind of combination I love for early fall outfits, when it’s cool enough for knitwear and boots but you don’t necessarily need a coat yet.

11. Olive Dress + Black Knee-High Boots

Boots are also an easy way to carry dresses into fall.

The olive ribbed midi dress creates a simple column of colour, while the cropped checked jacket adds shape and texture. Black knee-high boots keep the outfit grounded, and the orange suede bag gives the muted olive and neutral palette a small hit of brighter colour.

You could easily replace the lightweight jacket with a blazer or heavier wool coat later in the season.

12. Burgundy Midi Skirt + Black Knee-High Boots

For a slightly smarter fall skirt outfit with boots, combine a burgundy satin midi with a fitted chocolate top and oversized neutral blazer.

The fitted top is important here because there’s already volume in both the blazer and skirt. Keeping that middle layer streamlined makes the proportions much cleaner.

Black knee-high boots make the outfit feel sharper than brown ones would, while the chocolate suede bag connects back to the top.

13. Striped Sweater + Brown Ankle Boots

This is probably the easiest everyday outfit of the 15.

Straight or relaxed jeans, a navy striped sweater, chocolate suede ankle boots and a slouchy brown bag create a casual outfit that doesn’t rely on lots of trend pieces.

The navy is also a useful reminder that brown boots don’t have to be worn exclusively with warm colours. Navy, denim, pale blue and gray all look excellent against chocolate brown.

14. Trench Coat + Ankle Boots

A trench coat, striped Breton top and cream jeans is a classic transitional combination, but warm brown ankle boots make it feel much more autumnal.

I love cream denim at this time of year. There’s no reason to pack away your lighter jeans after summer; wearing them with camel, navy and brown immediately shifts them into fall.

The block-heeled ankle boots also make this a practical option for days when you’re going to be doing more walking.

15. Black Satin Skirt + Brown Ankle Boots

Finally, don’t assume a black skirt means you need black shoes.

Chocolate brown ankle boots soften this black satin maxi skirt and make the outfit feel less formal, while a simple gray sweater keeps the focus on the skirt.

The dark shoulder bag sits somewhere between black and brown, which helps tie the two colours together.

It’s a very simple outfit, but that’s why it works, especially if you want a way to wear a satin skirt without looking overly dressed up. I’ve got a whole post dedicated to satin skirts with boots outfits here!

What Boots Are in Style for Fall?

If you’re only adding one pair of boots to your wardrobe this fall, I’d put knee-high boots near the top of the list. They work so well with mini and midi skirts, dresses and even underneath wider-leg jeans and trousers.

Brown is also having a particularly strong moment. Chocolate and dark brown suede feel softer than black and work beautifully with the burgundy, olive, camel, denim and cream shades that tend to come back every fall.

That doesn’t mean ankle boots are going anywhere. A streamlined ankle boot with a pointed or softly squared toe remains one of the easiest options with jeans and trousers. If you already own black ankle boots, adding a brown or tan pair is an easy way to make your existing fall outfits feel different.

How to Wear Boots With Skirts in Fall

The easiest approach is to think about the overall proportion rather than trying to match a specific boot height to a specific skirt length.

With mini skirts, knee-high boots balance the amount of leg on show and make the outfit feel much more appropriate for cooler weather. With midi and maxi skirts, both tall and ankle boots can work. Letting a midi skirt fall over the top of a tall boot creates a particularly streamlined look and avoids an awkward strip of bare leg.

You can also use your boots to change the mood of the same skirt. Sleek black leather boots make a satin midi feel polished, while brown suede boots immediately make it softer and more casual.

How to Style Brown Boots for Fall

You don’t need to wear an entirely brown outfit.

In fact, some of the best colours to wear with brown boots are already probably in your wardrobe: blue denim, cream, gray, burgundy, olive, navy and camel.

For an easy starting point, try dark brown boots with blue jeans and a neutral sweater. Once you’re comfortable with that combination, add another fall colour such as rust, green or burgundy.

And don’t worry about matching your handbag exactly to your boots. Keeping both within the same warm or cool colour family generally looks more modern than an exact shoe-and-bag match.

The Fall Boot Outfit Formulas Worth Remembering

You don’t need 15 completely different wardrobes to recreate these looks. Most of them come back to a handful of reliable combinations: knee-high boots + mini skirt + knit, tall boots + midi skirt + sweater, ankle boots + jeans + jacket, boots + midi dress + fall jacket, and brown boots + denim + one richer seasonal color.

Those formulas are what make boots so useful once fall arrives. Start with the pieces you already wear regularly, then use the boots to shift them into the new season rather than rebuilding every outfit from scratch.

If you’re trying to get more outfits from fewer pieces, my fall capsule wardrobe is a good place to start, with plenty of versatile basics that work across the season.
