I Swapped My Curling Wand for This, and Haven’t Looked Back
Heatless curls are my favourite way to style my hair these days. Before having kids, I used to spend ages curling my hair, only for it to drop out by lunchtime. Now, I barely have time to brush it, let alone plug in a styling tool. Heatless curls let me go to sleep and wake up with soft, effortless waves, without heat, damage, or extra styling time in the morning. That said, there is definitely a learning curve, and some days work better than others.
If you have tried overnight heatless curls and ended up with waves that dropped by breakfast, one side looking better than the other, frizz at the roots, or dents you could not smooth out, you are not alone. The issue is rarely heatless curls themselves. It is usually down to how they are done, which methods suit your hair type, and the expectations you start with.
This post breaks down the overnight heatless curl methods that actually work in real life, explains why some popular techniques fail, and shows how to get soft, wearable waves that last beyond the first hour of the day. Not perfect, salon-style curls, but realistic results you can build into your routine without heat or overthinking it.
1. The Classic Sock Curls (Yes, Really!)
If you have a spare pair of socks, you already own a heatless curling tool. This method is surprisingly comfortable to sleep in and gives soft, natural-looking waves without clips digging into your scalp overnight.
I get very loose, brushed-out waves from this method when I divide my hair into two sections. It is one of the easiest techniques if you are new to heatless curls.

How to do it
Section your hair
Start with clean, slightly damp hair and divide it into even sections. Two sections will give loose waves, while four sections create a more defined curl.
Clip away unused sections
Tie or clip back the hair you are not working on yet. If your hair struggles to hold a curl, lightly mist it with a texturising spray at this stage.
Attach the sock
Take one sock and clip or tie the closed toe end to the top of your head, close to where you want the curl to start.
Wrap the hair
Wrap your hair around the sock, starting near the root and working down. Wrap away from your face for a softer, more flattering shape.
Secure the curl
Once all the hair is wrapped, fold the sock over the hair so the curl is tucked inside. Pull the open end of the sock up and over to hold everything in place.
Repeat on all sections
Continue until all sections are wrapped. It will look strange. The first time I tried this, my five year old called me “sockhead”, and unfortunately, the name stuck for a while!
Sleep on it
Go about your evening as normal and let the curls set overnight.
The morning reveal
Unwrap gently in the morning and use your fingers to separate the curls. You should be left with soft, bouncy waves without any heat or morning effort.
Tip: Soft, fluffy socks are the most comfortable to sleep in and help reduce frizz.
2. The Viral Dressing Gown Belt Method
This TikTok-famous method is popular for a reason. It is quick, simple, and works on most hair types. The result is loose, flowing curls that look very natural.

How to do it
Lay a dressing gown belt or a long scarf over your head like a headband.
Split your hair down the middle into two sections.
Twist each section around the belt, adding more hair as you go, similar to a loose French braid.
Secure the ends with scrunchies and leave it in overnight.
In the morning, gently unravel for relaxed, wearable waves.
Tip: If your hair drops easily, lightly mist it with a flexible hold hairspray before wrapping.
3. Heatless Curl Ribbons (For That Salon Blowout Look)
Heatless curling ribbons are my most reliable option when I want a smoother, more polished result. They create big, bouncy waves that last well and look closer to a salon blowdry.
This is my favourite and most foolproof method. It is similar to the dressing gown belt trick, but I find it easier to use and much better for reducing frizz and flyaways.

How to do it
Start with damp hair
Let your hair air dry until it is about 80 percent dry, or lightly mist dry hair with water. It should feel damp, not wet.
Clip the ribbon in place
Part your hair down the middle and clip the curling ribbon to the top of your head so it sits securely like a headband. Split your hair into two sections.
Begin wrapping
Take a small section near your parting and wrap it around the ribbon, moving away from your face.
Add and wrap
Each time you wrap, add a little more hair to the section. Continue until all the hair is wrapped around the ribbon.
Secure the ends
Use a silk or satin scrunchie to gently secure the ends. Repeat on the other side.
Leave to set
For best results, leave the ribbon in for six to eight hours or overnight. If sleeping in it, a silk pillowcase or bonnet helps keep things smooth.
The reveal
Unwrap gently in the morning and separate the curls with your fingers. The result should be soft, shiny waves without heat damage.
4. Braiding for Effortless Beach Waves
Braiding is one of the simplest heatless methods and works especially well if your hair already has some natural movement.

The type of braid you choose affects the final result.
One braid gives soft, loose waves.
Two braids create more defined texture.
French or Dutch braids give waves from the root.
Multiple small braids create a tighter, crimped look.
How to do it
Braid damp hair before bed.
Secure the ends with silk scrunchies to avoid dents.
Sleep on it, then gently unravel and finger-comb in the morning.
Tip: Apply a small amount of curl cream or leave-in conditioner before braiding for extra hold and softness. I like JVN Complete Air Dry Cream because it smooths frizz without weighing the hair down.
5. Roller Set for Retro-Inspired Waves
If you love volume and a more structured curl, a roller set is a great heatless option. It works particularly well for fine hair that struggles to hold shape.

How to do it
Roll dry hair around velcro or foam rollers.
Secure with clips if needed.
Sleep on a silk pillowcase for comfort and reduced friction.
In the morning, unroll and shape with your fingers or a wide-tooth comb.
Big rollers create soft waves.
Smaller rollers give tighter curls.
Tip: A light mist of hairspray before rolling can help the curls last longer.
Will Heatless Curls Work on My Hair Type?
Heatless curls can work on most hair types, but you may need to adjust the method depending on your texture and the finish you want.
My hair has a natural loose wave, and I often use heatless curls a few days after wash day to refresh my hair and add shape. On these in-between days, I lightly mist my hair with water or leave-in conditioner, wrap it up, and wake up with revived waves.
If I want a sleeker, more polished curl, I blow-dry my hair straight first. This creates a smoother base and helps the curls form evenly with less frizz.
For thicker or curlier hair, smaller sections and a touch of styling cream can help the curls hold better. For fine or straight hair, a texturising spray or mousse adds grip and improves staying power.
It usually takes a bit of trial and error, but once you find what works for your hair, heatless curls become an easy and reliable part of your routine.
Can Heatless Curls Damage Hair?
One of the main reasons I switched to heatless curls was to reduce heat damage. Compared to curling wands or straighteners, heatless methods are much gentler on your hair.
You avoid the high temperatures that cause dryness, breakage, and split ends. That said, there are a few things to watch out for:
- Do not wrap too tightly, as this can cause tension and breakage over time.
- Use soft materials like silk or satin to reduce friction.
- Avoid wrapping soaking wet hair. Aim for around 70 to 80% dry.
- Go easy on styling products to prevent stiffness or tangling overnight.
Used correctly, heatless curls are one of the most hair-friendly ways to style and are ideal if you are trying to grow your hair or simplify your routine.
Making Your Heatless Curls Last Longer
- Finger-comb instead of brushing
- Use a light styling cream or serum
- Set with a flexible hold hairspray
- Sleep on a silk pillowcase to preserve the shape
