7 Summer Postpartum Outfits That Are Comfortable, Flattering & Easy to Wear

·

The postpartum period comes with enough challenges without having to stress about what to wear. Your pre-pregnancy clothes might not fit quite the same yet, maternity clothes no longer feel right, and when you’re running on broken sleep, the last thing you want is an uncomfortable outfit.

After two babies, I’ve found myself reaching for the same things over and over again in summer: loose linen trousers, easy dresses, oversized shirts and comfortable sandals.

The goal isn’t to hide your body. It’s about wearing clothes that feel good right now while still making you feel like you made an effort.

These are some of my favourite summer postpartum outfit ideas.

What to Look for in Postpartum Summer Outfits

Before we get to the outfits, it’s worth knowing what to actually prioritise. These are the things I look for every time:

Elastic or drawstring waistbands. Denim is uncomfortable at the best of times in summer. After a baby, it can be genuinely painful; especially if you’ve had a C-section or you’re still dealing with bloating in the early weeks. Pull-on waistbands are your best friend right now.

Linen and cotton fabrics. Your body is still regulating temperature and you may be experiencing more sweating than usual, particularly if you’re in the early postpartum weeks. Natural fibres breathe in a way that synthetics just don’t.

Relaxed or empire-line silhouettes. Anything fitted across the stomach area is going to feel uncomfortable and possibly unflattering when your body is still changing. Relaxed fits, wide-leg trousers, and empire-line dresses are all your allies here.

Layers you can add or remove. Postpartum temperature regulation is unpredictable. A light overshirt or cardigan you can tie around your waist or throw on as needed is worth its weight in gold, especially if you’re going from air-conditioned spaces to warm ones throughout the day.

Pieces that work for your real life. If you’ve got a newborn and a toddler, you don’t need occasion wear; you need things that hold up to a busy day while still looking intentional.

7 Postpartum Summer Outfits to Wear Right Now

1. Linen Shirt and Wide-Leg Trousers

If I could only recommend one postpartum summer outfit, it would be this one.

A pair of loose linen trousers is genuinely one of the most comfortable things you can put on your body in summer; they’re cool, they don’t dig in anywhere, and they look considerably more put together than they feel. I love layering an oversized linen shirt over a simple tank because it gives you coverage without feeling bulky. It’s also ideal if you’re breastfeeding and want easy access without buying a whole new wardrobe.

This is exactly the kind of outfit I would wear for a coffee run, a toddler park trip, or a casual lunch. Look for linen trousers with a proper elastic or wide waistband rather than a zip fly, and size up in the shirt if you want that relaxed, slightly oversized look. Neutral tones like oatmeal, sand, white, and chocolate brown are the easiest to mix and match.

2. Lightweight Co-Ord Set

Some days you want to look like you actually planned your outfit without having to actually plan your outfit. A co-ord set is the answer.

The matching pieces do all the heavy lifting, which is ideal when your brain is running at half capacity. And because most summer co-ords are cut in relaxed, wide-leg or straight-leg styles at the moment, they’re inherently comfortable to wear postpartum.

I love layering a simple fitted tank underneath so you can remove the overshirt or jacket if you get too warm. Adding a slightly different colour underneath like a deep burgundy under neutral linen, breaks up the look and makes it feel more styled.

This kind of outfit works well for anything slightly more elevated: a lunch with friends, a family gathering, a day out where you want to feel a bit more polished.

3. Relaxed Vacation Outfit

This is the outfit I always pack for family holidays, and it’s also one of the most practical postpartum combinations for warmer weather.

The key is the fit of the shorts. You want a relaxed, slightly wide-leg cut with a comfortable waistband, nothing too tight or low rise. Pair them with an oversized top that skims rather than clings and you have an outfit that genuinely works for a full day: a walk around town, lunch out, a beach trip, back to the hotel for nap time.

It’s comfortable enough for a day chasing kids but still looks nice in your holiday photos. For more vacation-friendly outfits, check out my Vacation Outfits for Mums post.

4. A Simple Empire-Line Midi Dress

Every postpartum wardrobe needs at least one dress like this.

An empire-line midi dress, the kind that’s fitted under the bust and then flows out from there, is one of the most flattering and comfortable shapes you can wear when your body is postpartum. It creates the illusion of a defined waist without anything sitting across your stomach, it’s completely breathable in hot weather, and you can be dressed and ready in about thirty seconds.

Midi length dresses are great in summer because they require almost no styling effort. Add flat sandals, sunglasses, and a tote bag and you’re genuinely done. No layering, no overthinking, no trying to make three pieces work together on four hours of sleep.

Look for versions with a bit of stretch in the fabric if you want extra comfort, and choose a floaty, woven fabric rather than anything jersey if you tend to run warm.

5. Butter Yellow Sundress

Butter yellow is having a genuine moment right now, and it happens to be one of the most wearable summer shades going as it’s warm enough to flatter most skin tones but soft enough to not feel too bold.

A floaty sundress in this shade with a gathered or slightly defined waist gives you shape without restriction. The key is going for a style with some structure around the bust or a gathered waist so it doesn’t look shapeless, you want it to skim rather than tent.

Woven accessories like a raffia bag, tan sandals, and a simple woven belt keep the whole look relaxed and holiday-ready. This is perfect for summer brunches, a baby shower, or genuinely any occasion where you want to look like you’ve made an effort without wearing anything that requires spanx.

6. Relaxed Wide-Leg Trousers and Tee

This is probably the outfit I’d wear most often in real life. A great pair of pull-on trousers and an oversized tee solve so many postpartum wardrobe problems. Neutral shades like cream, chocolate brown, and taupe create an effortlessly expensive-looking outfit.

It’s comfortable, forgiving and doesn’t require any thought. Sometimes that’s exactly what you need during those early months.

If you prefer denim to wide-leg trousers, these white jeans outfits are another easy option for summer.

7. Chocolate Brown Linen Set

This outfit proves that comfortable doesn’t have to mean sloppy. Dressing in one tone head to toe instantly looks expensive and considered. It’s one of the easiest styling tricks there is, and it works especially well postpartum because the single colour draws the eye in a way that’s lengthening and clean, rather than cutting your silhouette across the middle.

The linen fabric keeps it comfortable and breathable, and because the two pieces are clearly worn as a set, it looks intentional even on the days it absolutely wasn’t. Add simple leather or woven sandals and minimal gold jewellery, and you have an outfit that genuinely looks like you put thought into it.

Common Postpartum Summer Outfit Mistakes to Avoid

Buying things you hope to fit into soon. Buy for the body you have now. You will feel so much better in clothes that actually fit.

Defaulting to leggings for everything. Leggings are great, but in summer heat they’re genuinely uncomfortable. Linen and cotton pull-on trousers are just as easy to wear and much more versatile.

Avoiding colour because you feel self-conscious. Colour doesn’t draw attention to your body, an unflattering fit does. A floaty butter yellow dress or a relaxed olive linen set will feel just as comfortable as a grey version.

Buying clothes in your pre-pregnancy size. Your body has changed, potentially permanently in some ways, and that’s completely normal. Size up where you need to, especially in structured pieces.

Forgetting about footwear. Swelling in the feet and ankles is common postpartum. Make sure your sandals have some adjustability or give as anything rigid or very narrow across the foot may not work in the early weeks.

Getting dressed postpartum doesn’t need to be complicated, but it does need to work for where you actually are right now, not where you hope to be in three months, and not where you were a year ago.

The outfits in this post are all built around the same principles: breathable fabrics, relaxed silhouettes, and comfortable waistbands, with enough variety that you have options for everything from a beach holiday to a casual lunch with friends.

Buy a few pieces that fit and feel good, give yourself permission to enjoy getting dressed again, and don’t put it off until some imaginary future version of your body arrives. You deserve to feel like yourself now.
