Beach Vacation Outfits for Mums Over 30 (Here’s What I’d Actually Pack)

·

Holiday packing used to be so straightforward. In my twenties it was a new bikini for every day, a handful of going-out dresses that took up almost no luggage space, and absolutely zero anxiety about any of it. Somewhere between then and now, a couple of kids, a body that’s changed, and a much more casual wardrobe, it got a lot more complicated. I open my case a few days before we leave and nothing feels quite right. And I end up panic-buying something at the airport that I wear once and never think about again.

I still have a maxi dress I bought on my honeymoon eight years ago. It’s the most worn thing I own every summer. I’ve never found a better system than “find something you feel good in and wear it until it falls apart,” which is probably not what the fashion industry wants me to say, but here we are.

This post is basically that philosophy applied to a beach vacation outfit packing list. Five outfits for the five situations you actually find yourself in on vacation. If you want to sort out the beauty side of things before you go, my pre-holiday beauty prep routine is worth a read, and my beach vacation packing list covers everything else.

1. Beach Day Outfits

The swimsuit situation is the one I think about most before a holiday and the one I spend the least time actually worrying about once I’m there. Finding something that fits well and doesn’t require constant adjustment will instantly make you feel more confident poolside.

The ruched one piece in this edit does that. The gathering at the front is so flattering, and the colour goes with everything I’ve packed. I’d wear the white linen shirt dress as a cover up, and let the tan flat sandals, the woven tote, the panama hat and tortoiseshell sunglasses do the rest. Simple on purpose.

If you want nails that will actually survive a week of sun and sea, my easy beach vacation nails post is worth a look before you go.

2. Vacation Sightseeing Outfit

Sightseeing on a beach holiday is deceptively hard to dress for. You’re hot, you’re walking more than you planned, and you want to look stylish rather than someone who just rolled off a sun lounger.

Wide leg linen trousers are my answer to this every time. Cool enough that you’re not miserable, structured enough that they look intentional. I’d pair them with a fitted tank to keep the top half simple as the trousers are doing enough. The same flat sandals from the beach day because one really good pair of sandals beats three mediocre ones every time, the straw tote because it’s big enough to actually carry things, and the panama hat because you will be grateful for it after twenty minutes in the sun.

3. Casual Vacation Outfit

Realistically this is the outfit that gets the most use on any holiday I go on; it works for lunch, for wandering around, for an early evening when you can’t face getting changed again. One piece, no decisions required, looks more put-together than it has any right to.

The chocolate brown colour is doing a lot of work here. It goes with the tan sandals, the gold jewellery, the woven bag; everything pulls together without you having to think about it. The shoulder detail stops it looking purely casual and the side split means you can actually walk in it without doing a penguin shuffle. I’d wear the espadrille wedges for a small amount of heel, enough to feel like I made an effort, not enough to regret it after an hour on uneven ground, and the layered gold necklace and chunky hoops because they take ten seconds to put on and make everything look more polished.

4. Travel Day Outfit

Travel days are long and the temptation is to lean so far into comfort that you spend the whole journey feeling vaguely grim about yourself. I’ve done it. Turned up at the airport in something I wouldn’t wear to put the bins out and then wondered why I felt off for the rest of the day.

The version that actually works for me is wide leg jersey trousers which are comfortable enough to sleep in but look like proper trousers, with a tank top and white linen shirt on top that’s light enough for the heat but gives you something to put on when the air conditioning is set to arctic. Adidas Sambas need no explanation at this point; they’re comfortable, they go with everything, and they come off easily at security. The green canvas tote is practical and has enough personality that it doesn’t feel purely functional, and it fits under the seat in front, which is honestly the only metric that matters on a travel day.

5. Vacation Evening Outfit

The evening outfit is the one I always pack with the best intentions and then wear once, maybe twice. Because by day three the casual maxi dress has proven itself again and I can’t argue with the logic.

This eyelet midi dress does most of the work for you. It’s light enough for a warm evening, the length is flattering without being fussy, and the fabric detail means it reads as dressed up without needing much else around it. I’d keep the jewellery simple with chunky gold hoops and wear the kitten heel slingbacks because they’re the right amount of heel for cobblestones and long dinners; not flat enough to feel too casual, not high enough to cause discomfort. The wrap cardigan earns its place for evenings that start warm and cool down by dessert, and the chocolate shoulder bag ties everything together without trying too hard.

For quick makeup that matches the outfit without any fuss, my dewy summer makeup look is the one I’d do on holiday. Quick, works with a tan, doesn’t slide off in the heat.
