After just over 2 months of using the Project E LumaLux Face Pro LED Light Therapy Mask, I’ve seen significantly fewer breakouts, more even-looking skin, and a noticeable glow. My pigmentation hasn’t changed, and my rosacea-related redness is still hanging around, but overall I’m really pleased with how much healthier my skin looks. It’s absolutely worth it for improving overall skin quality.

About the LumaLux Face LED Mask

I’m not going to overcomplicate this, but there are a few specs that actually matter when it comes to LED masks.

The Fit, Comfort & Ease of Use

The mask fits really comfortably overall. It’s lightweight, flexible, and doesn’t feel heavy or awkward on your face. The adjustable straps are secure without being too tight.

I do have a slightly larger nose (which this mask kindly reminds me of!!), so I don’t get a super close fit around my chin, but it still covers everything that actually matters.

The eye protection is cushioned and does a good job of blocking out the light, which I really appreciate. As a migraine sufferer, I was cautious at first, but I’ve had no issues as long as I avoid using it during active migraines and keep my eyes closed. I use the time for a quick mindfulness session (and may have fallen asleep wearing it a few times!) instead of wandering around the house.

Using the controller is incredibly straightforward. You cycle through the modes with a single button, and the 3-minute timer switches off automatically.

The mask is a bit of a jumpscare the first time you put it on; my 3-year-old was not a fan, but my 6-year-old thought I looked like Iron Man, so I’ll take that as a win.

Why I Tried the Project E LumaLux LED Mask

LED masks are absolutely everywhere right now, but most of the reviews I’ve come across feel a bit… suspicious. They’re either wildly enthusiastic after about five uses, or they read like someone’s just listing features from the box.

I wanted to see what would actually happen with consistent, real-life use over a few months, especially as someone dealing with:

  • occasional hormonal breakouts
  • redness that refuses to quit
  • uneven texture
  • the beginnings of fine lines creeping in

Basically, I wanted the unglamorous truth – and I’m genuinely pleased with what I found.

How I Fit It Into My Skincare Routine

I keep it simple. I cleanse my face as usual, then use the mask on clean, dry skin. Once the 3-minute session is done, I move on to the rest of my routine.

One concern I’d had beforehand was whether using LED therapy would make my skin more sensitive to retinoids or other active ingredients. I’m happy to report that I haven’t seen any increased sensitivity or irritation when using retinoids or other actives after the mask.

My skin hasn’t felt more reactive or fragile, which is a relief because I wasn’t about to give up my retinol routine for anything. The mask has slotted into my routine seamlessly.

How I Used It

I didn’t follow a perfect routine, and that’s important because I don’t think most people do either. But even with my fairly relaxed approach, I’ve been really happy with the results.

  • Used 3 to 5 times per week on average
  • Skipped sessions during migraine days (screen time of any kind was a no)
  • Focused mainly on two modes:
    • Deep Rejuvenation (Red + Infrared + Deep Infrared) – Mode 1
    • Acne Control (Blue) – Mode 3

I mainly stuck to red and blue light modes, as these are the wavelengths with the strongest evidence behind them; the rest felt more like optional extras.

My Skin Before Using the Mask

Before starting, my skin was prone to hormonal breakouts, especially around my period. It was often a bit red and uneven, slightly textured in areas, and generally lacking that fresh, healthy glow unless I was really on top of my skincare routine.

Nothing catastrophic, but enough niggles that I was willing to try something new.

My Results After 2 Months

I’ll be honest, I wasn’t expecting much. I’d convinced myself this would be one of those “nice to have but not essential” devices. But nearly three months in, I’m genuinely impressed with the improvements I’ve seen.

For the first month, I kept things simple and mainly used the red light mode, occasionally switching to the red + blue (purple) mode when I felt like I needed it. I did see some early improvements, but I really started to notice a difference when I switched to using the lights separately (3 minutes of red followed by 3 minutes of blue). Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve taken that a step further and started doing 6 minutes of red on most days, then switching to 3 minutes of red and 3 minutes of blue around my period when I’m more prone to breakouts. That’s when things felt the most consistent in terms of results.

1. Breakouts: The Biggest Change

This is where I’ve seen the most noticeable improvement, and honestly, this alone has made the whole thing worthwhile.

I haven’t had any proper spots, even during my period. Usually, I’d expect at least one or two to show up like clockwork. Any small bumps that do appear seem to settle much faster than before.

This alone makes a strong case for using LED consistently, and it’s the change that’s made the biggest difference to how confident I feel in my skin.

2. Overall Glow & Skin Quality

My skin looks more even, brighter, and generally healthier. It’s not a dramatic overnight change, but it’s very noticeable over time.

I’ve had several comments about how well my skin looks, which is always nice to hear.

3. Firmness

I’ve noticed my skin feels slightly firmer, particularly around my cheeks and jawline. It’s subtle, but makeup definitely sits better, and my skin has a bit more bounce to it. It feels healthier and more resilient.

4. Redness

There has been a visible reduction in general redness, and my skin looks calmer overall. This was something I wasn’t necessarily expecting, so it’s been a really welcome bonus.

However, my nose still stays quite red because of mild rosacea, and that hasn’t significantly changed. So while general redness has improved, rosacea-specific redness hasn’t budged.

5. Texture & Fine Lines

Subtle improvement here. My skin feels smoother, and makeup sits better. There’s been no drastic change in fine lines (which is expected, to be fair), but the overall texture improvement is definitely noticeable when I’m applying foundation. Interestingly, it’s even more noticeable when I compare my before and after photos; it’s the kind of change that’s easy to miss day to day, but much clearer when you look back.

6. Pigmentation

I didn’t specifically use the green light mode, which is the one that claims to target pigmentation, as the evidence behind it is much less clear. So I can’t say whether that would make a difference, but using the modes I focused on, I didn’t notice any change in pigmentation. I plan to trial this mode over the next 2 months, so I will come back to update you on the results!

7. Unexpected Bonus: Hair Growth

This might be a coincidence, but I have noticed an increase in new hair growth around my hairline over the past month.

I initially dismissed it as random, but the Project E website does mention that red light therapy is believed to stimulate hair follicles. Given that the mask sits right at my hairline and I’ve been using predominantly red light modes, maybe it’s less of a coincidence than I first thought.

I can’t say for certain that the mask is responsible, but it’s an interesting observation worth mentioning.

Is It Worth It?

It is worth it if you want:

  • fewer breakouts (especially hormonal breakouts)
  • calmer, more even-looking skin
  • a low-effort way to support your routine
  • something quick and easy to stick to

It’s not worth it if you expect:

  • pigmentation to fade significantly (especially based on how I used it — I didn’t focus on the green light mode designed for this)
  • rosacea to disappear completely
  • instant or dramatic results

This is my first LED mask, so I can’t compare to any others from personal experience. But from what I’ve seen, the main differences are the higher LED count and the shorter 3-minute sessions. A lot of other masks require 10–20 minutes, which realistically I wouldn’t stick to.

How I’ll Keep Using It

Going forward, I’ll mostly stick with the red light mode as my base, as that’s what I’ve seen the most consistent results from. I’ll add in blue light occasionally when I feel a breakout coming on or around my period, when my skin is more unpredictable. I also want to start using the green light mode more regularly to see if it makes any difference to pigmentation and dark circles, as that’s something I haven’t really tested properly yet.

Final Thoughts

I’ve genuinely loved using this mask over the past few months, and it’s become one of the easiest parts of my routine to stay consistent with.

This isn’t a miracle device, but it’s also not a gimmick. It’s a really solid, low-effort addition that steadily improves your skin over time if you actually use it.

The biggest difference for me has been fewer breakouts (especially hormonal ones), smoother skin, and a generally healthier, more even look overall. It’s not dramatic day-to-day, but it’s the kind of change you notice over time.

I’ve mainly stuck to the red light modes, as they have the strongest evidence behind them, and that’s where I’ve seen the most consistent results. Using blue light separately when needed has also made a noticeable difference in breakouts. I haven’t properly tested the green light mode yet, so I’ll be interested to see whether that makes any difference to my areas of pigmentation and dark circles over time.

It’s also one of the few things I’ve actually managed to stick to consistently, which probably says more than anything else. For something that takes just a few minutes and requires almost no effort, it feels like a worthwhile addition.

I plan to keep using this for the foreseeable future – it’s earned its place in my routine, and I’d genuinely miss it if it wasn’t there.
